Bringing clarity to the conversation about ATM currency conversion charges in Czechia

ATM pricing has been a frequent topic of discussion in Czechia, often accompanied by confusion about how fees are structured and who applies them. A recent market comparison of ATM withdrawals by mesec.cz (Turista u českého bankomatu: Poplatek, špatný kurz, nebo obojí (TEST) – Měšec.cz) delivers necessary clarity into the public conversation about international ATM withdrawal fees in Czechia, based on all the facts.

The findings are consistent with what Euronet has been communicating over the years: that the Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) service is a standard feature of international cash withdrawals (Euronet ATM Fees Explained – Euronet). It is not unique to any single provider but widely offered by both banks and independent ATM operators across Czechia and beyond. This reflects the global adoption of DCC, an optional service offered to international cardholders when the ATM withdrawal currency is different from the customer’s home currency, to see and accept the presented ATM exchange rate upfront, instead of relying on their home bank’s exchange rate and potential fluctuations.

At the same time, the comparison illustrates that conversion charges vary across the market and across both bank-owned networks and independent ATM operators. This highlights an important point: ATM pricing operates within a competitive environment, where different operators apply different pricing models. Euronet’s own markups are currently within a range of 3,5%-14,95%, as are other banks’ markups, as we have found through our own market research (Moneta Bank 15,27%-19,47%).

Market overview

The chart and table above compare conversion fees for international withdrawals across the Czech market. Rather than pointing to a single outlier, it demonstrates a broader distribution of pricing levels across multiple providers. Note that the conversion fee percentages point to a comparison vis-à-vis the European Central Bank daily exchange rate. In non-EU markets, the markup fee may be different due to a different base rate reference.

Ultimately, what matters most in every ATM transaction is transparency and choice. Customers are clearly informed about the terms of the transaction and can decide whether to accept the offered conversion rate or continue using their own bank’s exchange rate.
